SESOIL

Unsaturated Soil Zone Transport and Fate Model

SESOIL is a one-dimensional vertical transport screening-level model for the unsaturated (vadose) zone that simulates RNA based on diffusion, adsorption, volatilization, biodegradation, cation exchange and hydrolysis. SESOIL is an acronym for the Seasonal Soil compartment model. It contains three submodels that simultaneously simulate contaminant transport, soil water movement and soil erosion. It is the vadose zone model by which all other vadose zone models are judged. What sets SESOIL apart is its ability to simulate seasonal climatic variations and varying soil properties with depth. Contaminant transport can be simulated:

• Without biological decay, or

• With biodegradation simulated as a first-order decay process.

SESOIL 6.3 now includes a value for the water diffusion coefficient. This parameter is not used by SESOIL and is simply passed on to AT123D. Version 6.3 of SESOIL also includes a modification to the method of reading input files. This means that the user no longer needs to make changes to the config.sys and autoexec.bat files for SESOIL to run.

Establish Site-Specific Cleanup Objectives

SESOIL can be used to simulate the fate of residual contaminant levels in soil to establish site-specific cleanup objectives. It can also simulate time-dependent releases from underground storage tanks, landfills and agricultural practices. The public domain version of SESOIL was enhanced to simulate up to 999 years of contaminant transport. SEVIEW links the time-dependent contaminant load to groundwater from SESOIL to the AT123D and BIOSCREEN groundwater models.

 

AT123D

Groundwater Transport and Fate Model

AT123D is a generalized three-dimensional groundwater transport and fate model. AT123D is an acronym for Analytical Transient 1-, 2-, and 3-Dimensional Simulation of Waste Transport in the Aquifer System. It simulates contaminant transport under one-dimensional groundwater flow. Transport and fate processes simulated include advection, dispersion, diffusion, adsorption and biological decay. Contaminant transport can be simulated:

• Without biological decay, or

• With biodegradation simulated as a first-order decay process.

Version 6.3 of AT123D can simulate over 10,000 years of contaminant transport and contains a correction to the steady state algorithm.

Establish Site-Specific Cleanup Objectives

AT123D can model the time-dependent contaminant releases from the SESOIL vadose zone model. AT123D was enhanced to simulate up to 1,000 years of contaminant migration when linked to SESOIL. Results can be used to estimate how far a contaminant plume will migrate and can be compared to groundwater standards to evaluate risk at specific locations and times. AT123D is an analytical model. This means that contaminant concentrations are determined independently for each node and there is no need to establish a dense grid network of nodes.

 

MODFLOW Link

SESOIL to MODFLOW/MT3D Link

SEVIEW contains the only link between the SESOIL vadose zone model and MODFLOW/MT3D. This link is versatile enough that it can be used with almost any groundwater transport and fate model with provisions for varying loads.

Groundwater Transport and Fate Model

MODFLOW is a three-dimensional finite-difference groundwater model. It can simulate steady state and transient flow conditions in irregularly shaped aquifers. Individual aquifer layers can be confined, unconfined, or a combination of confined and unconfined. Influence from external stresses, such as flow to wells, areal recharge, evapotranspiration, flow to drains, and flow through river beds, can be simulated. Hydraulic conductivities or transmissivities for any layer may differ spatially and be anisotropic.

Establish Site-Specific Cleanup Objectives

MODFLOW (MT3D or RT3D) can now utilize the time-dependent contaminant release rates from the SESOIL vadose zone model as load to groundwater. Users can establish varying time step lengths. This means that the MODFLOW time step do not need to be set to one month when linked to SESOIL.

 

BIOSCREEN

Groundwater Transport and Fate Model

BIOSCREEN is a screening level groundwater transport and fate model and is based on the Domenico analytical model. It simulates contaminant transport based on advection, dispersion, adsorption and biological decay. Contaminant transport can be simulated:

• Without biological decay,

• With biodegradation simulated as a first-order decay process, or

• with biodegradation based on instantaneous reactions.

Establish Site-Specific Cleanup Objectives

When used with SEVIEW, BIOSCREEN can be calibrated to the time-dependent contaminant load to groundwater from SESOIL. Results can be used to estimate how far a contaminant plume will migrate and can be compared to groundwater standards to evaluate risk at specific locations and times.

BUSTR-Screen

Groundwater Transport and Fate Model

BUSTR-Screen is a screening level groundwater transport model that combines an expanded user interface with the BIOSCREEN model. This was done to simplify modeling and to document input parameters. Using SEVIEW the BUSTR-Screen interface can also be used to run the AT123D groundwater model.

As with BIOSCREEN, it is based on the Domenico analytical model and can simulate contaminant transport and fate based on advection, dispersion, adsorption and biological decay. Contaminant transport and fate can be simulated:

• Without biological decay, or

• With biodegradation simulated as a first-order decay process.
